Dentures

Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore aesthetics and function.

If you’ve lost all or some of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your overall health.

Types of Dentures:

Conventional

This type of denture is made after the damaged teeth are removed from your mouth and the gums have healed properly. It can be a full or a partial denture depending on the number of teeth to be replaced.

Immediate

This type of removable denture is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. We will take impressions and make models of your teeth during a previous visit. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period.

This denture may need to be relined or remade after your jaw has healed.

Acrylic

If you have no teeth left or have gum disease, then acrylic/plastic dentures are generally the best.

They are usually the most cost effective and can be made within a short period of time. Other advantages are :

  • 1.They can be relined
  • 2.Added to (in case you lose any more natural teeth due to gum disease)
  • 3.Can be used as a temporary denture before dental implants, or whilst waiting for chrome dentures

Chrome cobalt( metal)

However, if you have some remaining teeth, it’s definitely worth considering a metal denture. They are longer lasting and provide extra strength. They provide a better fit and are very comfortable to wear.

As we can place clasps for better retention, meaning that the dentures stay in really well – we don’t need to cover your palate. This has the following advantages :

  • 1.Taste of food is better compared to an acrylic (plastic) denture, which covers the roof of the mouth.
  • 2.More efficient during eating, as you can feel the texture / temperature of food on your palate
  • 3.More comfort while wearing the denture
  • 4.No gagging as the denture doesn’t go far back in your mouth

How to take care of your dentures?

  • 1.Rinse your dentures before brushing to remove any loose food or debris.
  • 2.Use a soft bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleanser to gently brush all the surfaces of the dentures so they don't get scratched.
  • 3.When brushing, clean your mouth thoroughly—including your gums, cheeks, roof of your mouth and tongue to remove any plaque. This can help reduce the risk of fungal infection and bad breath.
  • 4.When you’re not wearing your dentures, put them in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping.
  • 5.Occasionally, denture wearers may use adhesives. Adhesives come in many forms: creams, powders, pads/wafers, or cushions. If you use one of these products, read the manufacturer’s instructions before use.
